Samannay is a socio-cultural organization of people from Assam (North-Eastern India) who have migrated to the Delhi-NCR region or are currently residing here in occupational or academic pursuit. It has been observed that over the last few decades, the number of such people has grown to quite an extent. Most of them reside in different nooks and corners of Delhi and NCR, largely isolated from any community or social participation, related to their roots. This void in connectivity is most conspicuous during festive seasons. The second generations of those who have migrated, too, are largely unfamiliar to their root culture. A few of the existing organizations representative of the community are putting their best efforts to try and fulfill this aspiration. But as this community has grown over time, a large section of its members remain isolated from such activities for various reasons.
A group of concerned enthusiasts- mostly residing in North-Western Delhi- has felt the pressing need to locate and bring under one umbrella all the people willing to rejuvenate their socio-cultural root. As a result, ‘Samannay’ was born.
It came into existence on 18/10/2014, on the auspicious occasion of Kati Bihu. Samannay’s first initiative, the celebration of Bhogali Bihu on 14/1/2015, was a commendable success. It entailed the enthusiastic participation of people from all walks of life, irrespective of their socio-cultural, ethnic or religious backgrounds.
Assam is a region known for its vast ethnic, religious and linguistic diversity. Similarly, the people of the land of the Red River carry along with them a huge spectrum of diverse cultural wealth. One of Samannay’s prime objectives is to introduce the rest of the communities of Delhi-NCR to this culture.
